Moving is always exciting but remember your wonderful family dog/ Keeping your dog stress-free and healthy during pre-move travel, packing of the home, travel to new home and introduction to the new home/neighborhood is paramount. Ensure someone they are comfortable with cares for them when you travel to house-hunt. Give then a place of security weeks before the packing where they will be able to stay the day the movers come. Have this be their special place of love and fun for them. That way the day that the movers come, it is comfortable to them they are in their familiar surroundings. Spend lots of time with them and minimize the disruption in their routine. If you walk them every day at 10am, don't stop that routine. Consistency is important to your dog's security while your attention to their actions is important to ensure they stay healthy. When it comes time to move, be sure you have selected the right choice of transportation for your dog. If you can physically driver your dog without stressful hotel stops, that is obviously best. If not, consider your pet's health and mental welfare if you select a "pet bulk hauling" driving or flying service. No matter how wonderful the service is described or advertised, your dog is going to be crated with a bunch of other dogs and cats around them. What kind of stress will your dog go through being crated in a strange place with loud noises coupled with the fact there will be many other dogs barking and cats meowing around them for an extended period of time. I know my dogs would not handle that well, and the stress on them would be awful. But then again, i would never subject to them to the health risks of altitude changes with any pet flying service if there were a choice to keep them on the ground. Lastly be sure to pack your pet's favorite belongings with them during their travel so when they get to their new home, they have items familiar to them. Keep their bed, blankets, bowls, etc with them so immediately upon arrival, they feel confident they belong. Give them plenty of love and reassurance. Your dog and/or cat is part of your family so including them in your moving plans is as important as any other facet of your transition. Having the plans that best suit your dog will pay off big by keeping your dog healthy, happy and well adjusted to their new home/neighborhood.
